Mini Christmas Wreaths DIY

Mini Christmas wreaths offer endless ways to be creative and use up found textiles and scraps. This tutorial is made using some net tulle I picked up from the op shop, but I have made a few from various fabric scraps. What you decorate them with all depends on what you’ve got lying around that’s cute and Christmassy. In the ones pictured I have mostly used buttons and ribbons. Once you’ve got the hang of it, there’s nothing stopping you from making as many as you like with anything round and any bits of fabric! For example, I made a few from bits of garden hose taped into a circle shape.

You will need:

  • wooden curtain ring (6.5cm external diameter, 4.5cm internal diameter) [mine are from Facebook marketplace]
  • green netting 150cm W x 20cm H [mine is from the op shop]
  • piece of string 20-30cm long [mostly saved off tags]
  • pipe cleaner or piece of wire approximately 30cm [donated by Project Stationery]
  • beads or buttons to decorate (5-9 should do) [spare buttons off clothes and a broken necklace]
  • red ribbon 30 cm long [saved off a gift]

Fix your fabric on to the curtain ring

Cut 24 strips of netting approximately 6cm x 20cm.

If you are using woven cotton fabric instead of netting, use pinking shears (zig zag scissors) to prevent excess fraying and cut the strips 3cm wide instead of 6cm.

Loop the netting strip in half, place the looped section behind the curtain ring, take the loose ends across the front of the curtain ring, then thread them through the loop and pull the fabric tight.

Add your decorations

Thread your beads onto your pipe cleaner and weave them into or around your fabric.

Alternatively, you can cut the pipe cleaner and secure beads/buttons individually to the netting.

Add your bow and hanging string

Tie a bow with your red ribbon at the top or bottom of your mini wreath.

Fold your piece of string in half, repeat steps above to secure the string through the eye screw.

That’s it! Hang them on your tree or your door or in your windows or on your mailbox or use them as a decoration on a special present! Just try not to buy anything special to make it. That’s half the fun. Have a Scrappy Christmas.
